The first time I saw the ZYPPAH I was surprised. With its bright-green and black color scheme I couldn’t believe it was an anti-snoring device. Streamlined and modern looking it also surprised me with its dual-action approach (More about that later). There’s also a camouflage version named the Zyppah Military!

So why does the ZYPPAH sit in third place on my all time Greatest Hits of anti-snoring devices? To find out, please keep reading!

What It Is And What It Does

This device is a jaw-retaining mouthpiece or MAD and it works by using a dual-action approach. That means it does two things at once. It holds your jaw forward, so that your neck doesn’t cave in and constrict your airway at night. It also stops your tongue from moving around and causing problems. So it’s a two-in-one approach. It’s that simple.

Since it release in June 2012 it’s really made a name for itself. I personally think it’s going to be around for a long time. Not least because of the dual action approach it takes to reduce or even stop snoring.

As a hybrid mouthpiece it offers many different kinds of snorers a real opportunity to get a good night’s sleep. How? Well, it uses both jaw adjustment and tongue stabilization technologies.

Let’s take a closer look at what that means.

zyppah-how-it-worksIt opens up the airways by pushing and holding the lower jaw in a forward position. Everything round your neck and throat is kept tight and vibration free.

An elastic band placed towards the back of the device holds your tongue gently in place. Your tongue stays put and doesn’t fall around your mouth causing problems!

So, to be clear, this device helps you in two ways:

Using this double action the Zyppah firstly tightens loose tissue around the neck and jaw, stopping it from vibrating. Noise reduction one! Check! Secondly, it keeps your tongue out of your throat. Noise reduction two! Check!

So there you have it: Push the jaw forwards, hold the tongue in place, and the Rx’s dual-action effectively takes on your snoring.

Using both of these methods is a big, big, plus. It’s a real step forward in the development of mouthpieces and is really quiet unique. No other mouthpiece I know of offers this duel-action approach as a solution.

Furthermore, to help with more natural sleep, a generous breather hole is placed at the front of the device.

Fit Your ZYPPAH Perfectly

The Rx uses a tried and tested way to give the perfect custom fit: The boil and bite method. All you need to prepare for the fit is boiling water, two small bowls or mugs large enough to hold your Zyppah, tongs and a clock or timer. Be sure not to see this as a difficult or technically demanding procedure. It isn’t. Even I can do it!

Here’s how to fit your new anti-snoring device:

  • Run enough cold water to cover the Rx into one of the two bowls or mugs and put in enough ice to get the water super chilled. Put this safely to one side for later.
  • Boil enough water so that you can be sure to totally cover the Rx.
  • Pour the boiling water into the remaining bowl or mug. Completely immerse the device and leave it there for one whole minute. Here’s where your clock or timer comes into play!
  • Remove it carefully using the tongs and then let it cool so that it can be handled safely. Picking it up by the rubber band is best.
  • Be absolutely sure you can read “Zyppah” in the lower tray. Check again!
  • Place it in your mouth with the lower teeth connecting to where the green thermoplastic touches the black hard Then, move your jaw slightly forward. It’s best to use a mirror here to help you align the device and your teeth.
  • Be sure that your upper teeth are also resting against the hard plastic.
  • When you have your teeth in position bite down for exactly one minute. Use your clock or timer.
  • Release your bite and carefully remove the RX. Place it in the icy water you put to one side. This will speed along the hardening process.
  • Leave it in the cold water for around a minute, or until you feel confident it has completely set. Place it in your mouth and check the fit.
  • You can repeat the process up to two more time if you are not happy with the results.

Again, it may seem like a lot of steps and a complicated process, but trust me, it really isn’t. If I can do it, anyone can!

price-tagA single ZYPPAH will set you back an all-inclusive $89.90. Personally I think this is a little towards the high end for a MAD but it does come with a 90-day money back guarantee. That’s pretty good if you think about it. You have 3-months to decide if you like it or not!

But if you do want to return it, make sure that you give them a call and get a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number before you send it back. The RMA number must be clearly written on the package for the return program to be valid.

Plus, if you need it replacing for any reason, there is a one-time replacement program. You may return it within 90-days and get a new one, no questions asked. But do remember to get your RMA!

The Good

  • A doctor with more than 30 years of experience, dentist Jonathan Greenburg, designed it.
  • Its dual design approach holds the jaw forward and keeps the tongue stationary. This really improves the chances of either reducing or stopping your snoring.
  • From the use of boil-and-bite, to the elastic band, it’s designed to be comfortable.
  • The fitting process allows you to achieve a really precise fit.
  • This device has three ticks of quality: It is American-made, BBB-accredited, and FDA-cleared.
  • Although an industry standard it is BPA-free and hypoallergenic.
  • Large airflow hole lets you breathe easy while you sleep.
  • There’s a 90-day user satisfaction guarantee. Can be extended to 6-months.
  • Sporty, streamlined, the design is modern looking.
  • Has links with a group that specializes in snoring and sleep apnea, the Snore-No-More facilities located in California.
  • All-inclusive cost, so there are no extra shipping and handling charges to discover.

The Bad

  • Has no adjustment option to change its size. For me this is a really important feature and should be available. For example, I really like the lower-jaw adjustability offered by the VitalSleep.
  • Fitting process must be followed very closely. It is a little more specific than that of others.
  • As with all MADs users will experience mild to moderate aches and pain in the mouth, teeth and jaw as they get used to it.
  • Some drooling will be experienced at first.
  • In my opinion it is expensive.
The Verdict

In my opinion the ZYPPAH’s is great product. Its effectiveness is really defined by its duel action feature. It’s also slick, comfortable, nice to look at, and a great option for all kinds of snorers everywhere.

In fact, if it were cheaper and had at least some kind of adjustability, I’d be happy to say it was my number two choice. That’s right, it could be second out of all the anti-snoring devices available! That’s quiet something, but unfortunately it doesn’t come with the adjustability or price to climb to either my second or number one spot.

But who knows the future? The makers of this solid performer may do a redesign. They may include some adjustability while reducing the cost. If that happens, the Rx would be a sure challenger for the highest place on the leadership board.

If you want to discover what my number two and number one choices are then take a look at the $60 VitalSleep, my number one MAD but second overall choice, and my top spot choice, the king of mouthpieces, the GMSS.
